Sport lawns, wild lawns or flowering meadows – well-groomed lawns in Leipzig

The multifunctional tool carrier Holder C 250 convinces year-round in the Leipzig area.

19. November 2014

Leipzig, July 2014 – Garten- und Landschaft Peter Hoffmann from Taucha takes care of more than 200 larger and smaller green facilities in and around Leipzig. Clients are mostly residential companies as well as municipalities and industrial operations. "We are measured by how a facility appears on a purely visual level," says managing director Peter Hoffmann. Lawn always makes up the largest area in a residential area, and if the tenants look out from the 5th or 6th floor, their first impression always is the lawn. "There are lawns everywhere. Therefore, it takes a predominant position in care and is also used most by the tenants," adds technical manager Matthias Frosch. The company from Saxony has more than 23 years of experience in landscape maintenance. The multifunctional tool carriers by Holder have been used from the beginning. Mowing, mulching, sweeping, aerification, dethatching, fertilising or watering – the Holder may be combined with many different devices. It does all work required in lawn care from pre- to final cutting and ensures practical usability especially on large areas. The articulated steering permits lawn cutting around trees and shrubbery, as well as precise cutting along the edges of paths. The special lawn tyres ensure that there is little pressure on the lawn, so that the earth areas are only little compacted. The C 250 also has a floating function; i.e., the attachment adjusts to irregular floors and thus always guarantees an even cut of the lawn. The machine is specifically suitable for residential areas due to its low noise and exhaust values.

The "Right" Cut "

At the moment, the lawn is often cut down to 2 to 3 cm. This causes it to turn brown rather than green in dry periods," Peter Hoffmann explains. Therefore, Hoffmann's company increasingly relies on mulch mowers, a further development of the sickle mower. Mulch mowers can also be easily installed on the Holder C 250 as an attachment. They cut the lawn to approx. 7 cm, but no less than 5 cm. Therefore, it does not dry entirely in dry periods, since the residue has a water content of up to 70 percent. The grass is cut and remains in the lawnmower for an extended period, where the residue is cut up small. It falls onto the lawn chopped small and may remain in the slightly higher grass. "Why should the residue be dragged away and the organic materials be left on the lawn? It's not visible," says Hoffmann. The apparent disadvantage: the lawns must be mowed a bit more often. Therefore, some clients are still hesitating to switch to the procedure. The mulching mowing processes can be done much faster, so that, according to Hoffmann, the costs correspond to those for fewer passes in conventional methods – or are even lower. "The disposal costs of lawn residue have clearly increased in the past. Considerable costs arise for the collection, removal and disposal of the different deposits. The mulching method therefore pays off."

Flowering Meadows and Wild Lawns – Trends in Landscape Care

Residential companies, as well as the city of Leipzig, more and more often desire wild lawns or meadows. The facilities should no longer simply be green, but also contain flowering areas that are included in the landscape design. The landscape-architectural demand increases, the design option versions increase – and so does the effort for landscape care in residential facilities or on municipal areas. Seeds are applied for flowering meadows with many different flower sequences across the year. "This way, children will get to know ladybirds, butterflies and other animals," Peter Hoffmann emphasises. This was also one of the "targets for the next years". Wild lawn areas are usually mowed at a height of 50 to 70 cm. The use of flail or cutter bar mowers has proven its worth in the company from Taucha.

Year-Round Uses of the Multifunctional Tool Carriers

The Holder C 250 is not only used in lawn care from April to October. The devices are not only "reliable", but also have "diverse uses" and would therefore never "stand around for half a year", says technical manager Matthias Frosch. The device covers all services offered by a garden and landscaping operation throughout the year: from winter service to grit collection after winter service, dethatching, raking or sweeping, general path cleaning. In parks with larger cut measures or felling work, the Holder is used to pull out the logs. It is used as a tractor unit for transport services of many different kinds. In addition to year-round use of the tool carriers, the company particularly focuses on handling and comfort. "After all, people are working with the machines for 8 hours a day," says Frosch. "Therefore, there should be a certain standard to keep employees healthy." Air conditioning, heating, radio, 360° all-round view and air-suspended seats – no worker has yet complained about the C 250, not on cold winter days and not in high summer.

Spindle mower

  • Technology: blades at a horizontal, rotating spindle and fixed counter-blade.
  • Method: Shear cutting.
  • Area of application: Golf courts, sports courts and in parks.
  • Benefit: Best cutting result.
  • Disadvantage: Relatively high maintenance costs, sensitive against foreign bodies.
  • Development phase: First lawnmower technology.

Sickle mower

  • Technology: Sharp blade with high rotational speed
  • Method: Cutting off the lawns
  • Area of application: Public green facilities, industry, private lawns
  • Benefits: Good area output, low sensitivity to interferences
  • Disadvantage: Imprecise cut, at blunt blades partially brown edges at the cutting areas.
  • Development phase: Alternative to the spindle mower.

Mulch mower

  • Technology: Special rotating sharp blade
  • Method: Cutting off the lawns and chopping the lawn residue
  • Area of application: Public green facilities, industry, private lawns
  • Benefits: No sweeping required, good area output, low sensitivity to interferences
  • Disadvantage: Imprecise cut, partially brown edges at the cut areas in case of blunt blades
  • Development phase: Technical further development of the sickle mower

Flail mower

  • Technology: Stiff or moving blades at rotating horizontal drum
  • Method: Cutting the lawn
  • Area of application: Public green facilities, areas in industrial facilities
  • Benefits: Robust against foreign bodies, no sweeping required
  • Disadvantage: Danger of rock impact, coarse cutting pattern at blunt blade
  • Development phase: Relatively new in the area of the fine lawn
